Keep it simple, try drinking more water and walking to lose weight.
Drinking water and walking have been the two main things I’ve increased since starting my weight loss journey and it’s the thing that consistently makes a difference to my overall health and weight loss success.
Now, I have to tell you I’d happily drink soda all day and not set foot out of the house, especially when it’s cold weather. So this was a fairly big lifestyle change for me personally.
I’m a life coach and I’ve learned through experience that small steps quickly add up and I know that I’m more likely to stick to a goal if it doesn’t feel too huge and overwhelming. So, my initial daily walking goal was simply to walk to the end of my drive and back. It’s really not a great big long drive either. You can fit two cars on my drive. I have a little Shih Tzu dog who does love to walk but is also happy to play in the backyard and snuggle with me on the sofa.
My first walking goal was simply to put his lead on and walk to the end of my drive, I had to put his lead on and walk to the end of the drive. Yes, I know this sounds pretty ridiculous but stick with me.
Well, actually it worked out great. If I’d set myself a goal of even walking 10 minutes a day, it would have been easier for me to make an excuse not to do it.
If I really didn’t want to walk I’d go to the end of the drive, turn around and come back in again. Goal achieved. And yes a few days I actually did this.
Mostly though once I was outside and the dog was looking all excited we’d go further.
There’s a park just up the road from my house which takes me about 5 minutes to walk to. Honestly, in those early days, I felt quite pleased with myself for walking that far on a regular basis.
It seems silly now, but it was really where I needed to start. Gradually that built up and eventually, we ditched the car on the morning run to the bus stop at the far end of our village – a 20-minute walk for me.
Now my son’s 13 and it’s not overly cool to have your mum walk with you, but it works okay in the mornings as everyone is going in dribs and drabs and we usually do the walk in the morning without any other of the kids being around.
Meeting him off the bus after school when they all get off at the same time would, however, be out of the question. So I walk for 30 minutes most school day mornings now before I start work and then I’ll usually walk again in the afternoon.
I’m happy with that. And it’s certainly a massive improvement.
Adding more water throughout the day
As for my water intake. I’ve cut out most of my fizzy drinks and cordials and just stick with water and a cup of tea during the day. I aim to drink 4 big glasses of water before our evening meal and then I’ll drink whatever I fancy in the evening.
This seems to work for me. It keeps me feeling awake and energized throughout the day.
When I don’t drink this amount I really notice a difference. I feel tired and sluggish.
Also, if I feel hungry and it’s not that long since I ate something, I drink some water. Did you know that when we are thirsty, we can feel hungry? So, go for water first.
Here’s a video with a super simple trick to let you know if you NEED to drink more.
