I had a funny sort of a day yesterday. I didn’t have my normal routine at all. I drove my son into school, so missed out on my usual morning walk, Indie (my dog) had to settle for playing in the back garden and chasing the pigeons who regularly torment him.
So by the time I’d been back to collect him and do some errands in town (none of which involved much walking), a quick visit with my sister which was basically half an hour sitting in the sun which was lovely, and eating 3 chocolate crispy cakes especially made for our visit and then the drive home, I’d managed to clock up a grand total of just over 3,000 steps.
If you’ve been reading my blog, you’ll know I’ve become a little obsessed with achieving 10,000 steps or more a day.
So here’s what happened next
I went out walking. We have a lovely country lane close to my house and I much prefer walking there to walking through the village on hard concrete. But it’s a bit isolated and I only like to walk so far up when I’m on my own. So I put Indie on his lead and off we went. Up the lane, down the lane, back up the lane, over to the duck pond, back up the lane, down the lane, back over to the duck pond and across to see the horses, back up and down the lane two more times.
It was a lovely late afternoon and yes some people were out in the gardens. Yes, they may well have thought I’d lost the plot, but I don’t care. What I do care about is knowing I’m getting fit.
I went home, made our evening meal, and did a few cleaning jobs whilst it was cooking. We had pulled pork pancakes, with veggie sticks. It wasn’t the most exciting meal in the world and it’s not a meal I’ll be repeating, but the veggie sticks were nice.
The Tesco delivery (food shopping) arrived about 7pm, so I was busy backwards and forwards with bags into the kitchen and putting them away. Lots of colourful fruit and veggies.
By this time I was close to 8000 steps, still 2000 to go and there was no way I’d top my 10,000 steps sitting watching TV, so off I went into the garden, watered all the plants using my ridiculously small watering can. So that I have to walk even more to keep going and filling it up.
The watering can was a gift a couple of years ago and it had a plant in it. It was never supposed to be for actually watering my outdoor plants but it gets me moving even more so I’m using it and I think it’s really sweet too.
I then spent the next hour, pulling up weeds, moving things around and generally tidying my back garden.
The end result was I finished the day just under 11,000 steps. Result!!
I went to bed happy with that.
Life doesn’t always go the way we plan and some days our normal routine goes out the window. It happens doesn’t it?
We just need to get a bit more creative and get those steps in any way we can to get more and more active and fitter.
Here’s Indie inspecting the garden pots. Or maybe he’s having a nibble on the flowers. Hmm.
Getting in my 10,000 steps each day isn’t always the easy option, but it is always the best option. I was tired and would have been quite happy sitting myself down in front of the TV for the night, but that’s not going to help me achieve my goals to lose weight, be healthier and get fitter in 2015.
