Childbirth is the most wonderful and life affirming experiences a woman can go through, but it would be churlish to deny the fact that it takes a toll on her body. Aside from the inevitable stretch marks and / or caesarian scars many women find themselves with an unexpected badge of honor following their childbirth that refuses to shift, even when the rest of her body returns to its pre-pregnancy normalcy. Here we’ll look at what causes the “mother’s apron” overhanging belly, and how to shift this unsightly memento of pregnancy in a healthy and sustainable way without resorting to starving yourself or resorting to expensive and potentially damaging diet pills.
What is a “Mother’s Apron?”
Following pregnancy (or any other form of weight gain for that matter), the skin is stretched, the fat surrounding the internal organs expands and fatty deposits are made in the omentum, resulting in an overhanging pouch of fatty tissue that hangs over the beltline down to the groin. This can be unsightly and hard to disguise not to mention an absolute nightmare to shift. Stubborn as it may be, however, it can be melted away so long as you do it right. Doing it right, however, is not a quick or easy enterprise. It requires hard work, dedication and for some of us a rethink of our relationship with food.
Why is it so hard to shift?
Many women get frustrated by their apron as it doesn’t seem to recede at the same rate as fat elsewhere on the body. This is because it is comprised of two different kinds of fat. The top layer is subcutaneous fat, the unsightly visible layer while the bottom layer is visceral fat which is what makes it so tenacious and can also lead to high blood pressure, diabetes and even heart disease.
Diet and supplements
The key to blitzing both of these troublesome kinds of fat lies in a comprehensive exercise routine (more on that shortly) and a diet that is rich in foods that will not only burn fat but help to keep unhelpful cravings at bay while giving you the energy you need to go about your day. Reducing your caloric intake may be appropriate but dropping it below 1000 calories a day can seriously impede your weight loss and damage your health.
Your diet should be supplemented with a thermogenic product made of natural ingredients that’s perfect for burning fat. Look for products containing green tea extract, piperine (black pepper extract) or ginger extract.
If you’ve been trying to get active, but are frustrated with slogging through endless planks and crunches to no avail, you need to rethink your exercise routine. In order to successfully blitz this troublesome fleshy pouch you need to move a lot and often. High intensity interval training exercises such as Insanity will help to blitz the fat all over your body while strengthening the lean muscle tissue beneath.
Whatever form your exercise takes, try to have some fun while doing it. Enjoying your exercise will make it so much more effective while helping you settle into a positive routine.
